We are migrating from an iSeries 650 running V4R5 to an iSeries 830 running V5R1. We don't have an opportunity...
to upgrade the 650 to V5R1 before the migration. What is the best method to save/restore the data while leaving the V5R1 OS environment on the 830 in tact?
Saving data on your V4R5 system via standard OS/400 SAV commands like SAVLIB, will create a tape that can be restored to a V5R1 system using RSTLIB.
You can run into problems when you try restoring data saved on one release to a "prior" release of OS/400. For example, you couldn't save data from a V5R1 system and restore it on a V4R5 system without specifying that you want to save it at the V4R5 release level ... Example: SAVLIB LIB(XXX) DEV(TAPE01) TGTRLS(V4R5M0)
So, save your data and restore it to your V5R1 system. Things should work just fine.
