The life expectancy of tapes

What is the life expectancy of tapes used on an IBM 3570 C01 Magstar.

1. Tapes used one a month
2. Tapes used once a year

Tapes are stored is a fire-rated safe.

There are many variables regarding tape retention, i.e., heat, humidity, cold, etc.... I have had direct experience with the 3570 and this is what I do:

I keep the tapes in active circulation for 18 months. Then I "retire" them to the scratch tape group that I use for ad hoc backups. Living in the Northeast, this seems to work well. You might want to check out the specs that IBM has to offer regarding the life expectancy of these tapes for your area.
