Security during file encryption

We are looking for a way to encrypt a particular iSeries data file. The file will be read/updated by RPGLE and VB.NET programs. What would be the best way to get this level of security?
If you are looking to encrypt the entire file, the easiest way may be to look at a third-party encryption solution. If you are looking to encrypt one field in a database file, you can use a trigger program or a new V5R3 exit point to invoke either software encryption APIs or APIs provided with a FIPS-compliant hardware crypto card. (The crypto card has the advantage of providing protection for encryption keys and the opportunity of separation of duties for managing the keys.)
