Saving the integrated file system

System i backup and recovery expert Ken Graap explains the correct string for saving the integrated file system.

What is the proper string for saving your IFS?
If you open the SAVE menu (GO SAVE) page down to Option 21 (Entire System), place your cursor on Option 21 and hit F1. You will see the HELP file for this option that details what it does. When you page down to the end of this HELP file you will see all the commands that are executed in order to save the entire system. This command saves the IFS:

SAV OBJ(('/*') ('/QSYS.LIB' *OMIT) ('/QDLS' *OMIT) UPDHST(*YES))

You will need to specify where the backup data should be written to (TAPxx), so the full command would be:

SAV DEV('QSYS.LIB/TAPxx.DEVD')
OBJ(('/*') ('/QSYS.LIB' *OMIT) ('/QDLS' *OMIT)
UPDHST(*YES))

Good Luck!
