SQL to update files, revisited

I have a comment regarding a recent Q&A, Using SQL to update files. The method you suggested for earlier releases is -- as far as I know -- required only if the parameters have different lengths. If the length is equal TRANSLATE will also work (i.e. in V4R5) and is less complex. If I'm wrong please tell me.
You are correct, I overlooked the usage of TRANSLATE (eg, TRANSLATE(col1, X'00',X'40') on pre-V5R3 releases.
