Connect an Okidata 390 Turbo to the AS/400

I am trying to connect an Okidata 390 Turbo to the AS/400 via external jet direct on the network. I can connect the printer and print text, but I'm trying to print barcodes with text. Is there a specific configuration for this? Or, can this even be done?

The AS/400 does not supply a specific WSCST (Workstation Customizing Table) that will allow you to use the OKIDATA to print barcodes unless the OKIDATA can emulate another supported printer capable of printing graphics. You could create your own WSC to drive the OKIDATA printer, but this is a detailed process that is probably not worth your trouble.

If this is a report, I would suggest that you use Advanced Function Printing in conjunction with an AS/400 supported printer. The HP laser jets are good in this role and very cost-effective.

If you are trying to print bar code labels, then I would suggest that you use a package by T.L. Ashford. They support a wide range of bar code formats, and they support almost every industrial strength bar code printer on the market. Their package is easy to use and cost-effective, and they provide excellent technical support.
