During normal installations of Client Access, configuring for performance is typically overlooked. The configuration outlined below reduces unnecessary LAN/WAN traffic during Client Access use by caching the IP address of the enterprise server. Additionally, this configuration prevents the system from negotiating ports with the server, ensuring that standard default service ports are used thus providing potential performance gains.

Performance configuration can be done from Operations Navigator of the client or Terminal Server. To configure Client Access, complete the following processes:

1. From Operations Navigator, right click on host AS/400(r) and select properties.

2. From the properties window, select the connection tab.

3. On the connection window, set IP address Lookup Frequency to After Startup. (This setting specifies whether or not to cache the Internet Protocol (IP) address for the connection to AS/400(r), and specifies how often the cache is refreshed as follows:

Always specifies that the IP address will be resolved for every connection attempt.

1 Hour, 1 Day, 1 Week specifies the IP address will be resolved only after the time-out period elapses.

After Startup specifies that the IP address will be resolved only once, immediately after PC startup.

Never specifies that the user-supplied IP address will always be used and will never be resolved using the system name.)

4. Set Where to Lookup Remote Port to Standard. This setting specifies how to resolve the remote port for a service.

Server specifies the service name that will be sent to the AS/400(r) service mapper for port resolution. The AS/400(r) service table can be modified to change any default range of Client Access service ports.

Local specifies the service name for which to search in the local SERVICES file. This file can be edited to change any default Client Access service port.

Standard specifies that the default Client Access port for each service will always be used.

Although the configuration outlined above constitutes only one small performance enhancement, this change will reduce unnecessary network traffic and thus improve overall performance.
