Now-a-days source and data is very vital and we need to figure out the best way to retain the system operation without any hassles if disaster occurs.
Backing up the entire system
* Login as QSECOFR, or any other user who has QSECOFR authority.
* Type Command GO BACKUP on any command line.
* Select the option 21 for entire system backup.
Steps to be followed before you start the process:
1. Make sure the system is in restricted mode and that no user other than QSECOFR should be signed on to the system.
2. To make sure no user other than QSECOFR exists on the system, issue the command ENDTCP followed by ENDHOSTSVR *ALL.
3. The system is in restricted mode when all the subsystems are ended.
4. After typing the option 21, the system will ask you to transfer the job to controlling subsystem job queue. To know which is the controlling subsystem on your AS/400 system, type the command DSPSYSVAL QCTLSBSD on any command line and enter the 5 for display.
5. Again type the command GO BACKUP on any command line and enter the option 21, which will start the entire system backup. Leave the default options as it is to take the entire system backup of option 21.
Apart from the entire system backup, as an administrator you need to know some basic precautions and monitoring techniques on the AS/400.
Basic precautions and monitoring:
1. Every day see the QHST file by issuing the command DSPLOG command.
2. Observe every day the message in QSYSOPR message queue by issuing DSPMSG QSYSOPR.
3. Check the status of all disks by typing the command WRKDSKSTS & Press the function key F11 to know the status of each disk.
4. Check for the profile activity by issuing ANZPRFACT command.
5. Make sure to delete unwanted spool files every day.
6. Make sure at least once in 3 months to issue the command RCLSTG.
