Use FTP to communicate with the iSeries from a PC

Access the iSeries using FTP

1. Go to command prompt.

2. Type FTP or FTP

3. The system will prompt for User name and password. Enter the AS/400 user name and Password.

4. Use the command CD to change the current library in AS/400 to the required value.

5. Now you can use any command. I think there are 42 commands.

6. By typing? or help, you can get a list of valid commands.

7. Note that FTP is case sensitive and always use lower case.

8. To get a file from AS/400 to PC, you can use get or mget(for multiple files)

9. To put a file from PC to AS/400, you can use put or mput(for multiple puts).

10. Let me now explain 'get' in a detailed fashion.

a. Type get and press enter.
b. Type the remote AS/400 file name. Suppose you want the member PROG1 in source file QRPGSRC, type QRPGSRC.PROG1 and press enter.
c. Type the file name you want in PC. Don't forget to give the file extension. Eg. you can give PROGPC1.TXT and press enter.
d. The transfer from AS/400 to PC is complete. This is 25 times faster than traditional File Transfer using Client Access.

11. Let me now explain 'put' in a detailed fashion.

a. Type put and press enter.
b. Type the file name you have in PC. Don't forget to give the file extension. Eg. you can give PROGPC1.TXT and press enter.
c. Type the remote AS/400 file name. Suppose you want the member PROG2 in source file QRPGSRC, type QRPGSRC.PROG2 ...

12. Let me now explain 'mget' in a detailed fashion.

a. Type mget and press enter.
b. Type the remote AS/400 file name. Suppose you want all the members in source file QRPGSRC, type LIB NAME/QRPGSRC and press enter.
c. Type the file name you want in PC. Don't forget to give the file extension. Eg. you can give PROGPC1.TXT and press enter.
If you don't want to specify the member name, just press enter and file will be created in PC with the name of QRPGSR~n and extension DAT. i.e. You will have tough time to find which member is which file.
d. The transfer from AS/400 to PC is complete. This is 25 times faster than traditional File Transfer using Client Access.

13. Let me now explain 'mput' in a detailed fashion.

a. Type put and press enter.
b. Type the file names you have in PC. Suppose you want to transfer all files in a directory, type C:/windows/*.*
c. Type the remote AS/400 file name. Suppose you want the member PROG3 in source file QRPGSRC, type QRPGSRC.PROG3 and press enter.
d. The transfer from PC to AS/400 is complete. This is 25 times faster than traditional File Transfer using Client Access.
