An ITKnowledge Exchange (ITKE) member recently had a question about putting a procedure in place for the i5 server to replace the existing iSeries in his shop. Thankfully, fellow iSeries users jumped in on the conversation and helped out. Here is a portion of the conversation. Read the rest of the thread here.
" ObjectAuthority " asked:
We are planning to procure a single i5 server to replace our existing iSeries' -- 600 & 620. I'm looking for some help/methods/procedures to follow on sizing the new i5 server. Any suggestions you have would be very much appreciated.
"Guillet "responded:
It depends on several criteria:
- Processor type of 600 and 620
- Actual usage of your machines (average percentage of CPU used, interactive part and batch part of it, RAM & DASD config...)
- Future usage of the iSeries (same applications or new Web designed applications)
The performance of a 600 is from 23 to 73 CPW for batch and 16 to 24 CPW for interactive.
The performance of a 620 is from 50 to 464 CPW for batch and 31 to 57 CPW for interactive.
But you certainly need less than addition of both machine's power.
The capacity planning tool in PM/400 can help you to know your needs.
"USisBest " responded:
Your IBM Solution Provider is your best resource. If you need to do this on your own, use PM/400.
"Fpoeta" responded:
I concur on the Solution Provider(SP). However, it is best if you find a SP who has experience in working with PM400. Also, make sure you provide him with your game plan for the next two years. Adding WebSphere or HATs can impact performance decisions greatly.
