Irvine Calif.-based Wynne designs ERP software for construction and rental companies called RentalMan.

Mike Stilwagner, vice president of Wynne Systems said for customers that have licensed his company's software, or those to whom Wynne is an application service provider, Wynne will provide vaulted, asynchronous data replication.

"It'll run on our hardware," Stilwagner said, who worked with IBM to iron out any environmental kinks. "It costs us money to provide a disaster recovery plan, but we can turn it into something we can drive revenue with."

Stilwagner said the ball got rolling when he realized in late 2004 that more of his clients had a need for high availability. He saw that clients could stand to benefit without needing in-house expertise or high cash outlay in order to implement it.

"It's not going to be a hard sell," Stilwagner said. "Our customers already trust us with keeping their systems running, and Lakeview resources provide something on an ongoing basis that our clients won't have to learn. They're not going to need a new skill set. It'll be one throat to choke if there are problems."

When Wynne shopped around for a disaster recovery provider, the company considered Vision Solutions Inc. and DataMirror Corp., but Stilwagner said Lakeview won on all the fronts.

"We looked at the range of what could be replicated in terms of the various objects on the 400," Stilwagner said. "Lakeview had the highest score."

Stilwagner said contracts will be month to month, and pricing will be based on the level of service and allowable downtime for the company.

Joe Clabby, president of Clabby analytics, said the scenario illustrates a characteristic advantage of System i channel.

"The System i buyer doesn't want to do integration work themselves. It's all about combinations like this," Clabby said. "The big difference between.Unix and the System i world is what partners you can get together to get the product through the channel. This is emblematic."
