At the Fall COMMON User Conference, BCD, RJS Software and looksoftware stepped out with news about their new Web application development and application modernization tools.
BCD debuts WebSmart Clover
Business Computer Design (BCD), exclusive distributor of Web rapid application development tool WebSmart, has made Web application development even faster with its announcement of Clover.
Clover is an iSeries/i5 query tool that generates robust reports in an HTML format for display in Web browsers. And it does it in just minutes without coding. According to BCD, iSeries shops can put aside Query/400 and other query tools that are slow and limited in scope once they start using Clover.
Both end users and developers can use Clover to design iSeries graphical reports, queries, charts and graphs, and to extract iSeries data to Excel and more using a PC-based IDE. In fact, Clover allows three levels of users: end users, power users and developers.
A key feature of this tool is that it is browser-based, which means there are no client seats. Also important is that it doesn't require many resources, as the WebSmart server drives it.
Clover integrates seamlessly into the WebSmart IDE with no separate installation procedure. Its features are accessible once WebSmart's main components are installed.
Like WebSmart, Clover offers prompts, templates and wizards that eliminate much of the work for you. To create a report with Clover, you first select a template, then a series of wizards walk you through the report design process.
Clover will be generally available in January 2006. For more information, visit www.bcdsoftware.com/clover.htm.
RJS Software releases iSeries Data Access Provider
RJS Software Systems brings the Windows and iSeries worlds together with its release of iSeried Data Access Provider.
This tool allows VB, VB.NET, ASP and ASP.NET developers to quickly build desktop or Web applications that can access live iSeries data using record-level access, SQL, remote program calls or remote commands.
According to RJS Software, iSeries Data Access Provider fills a needed niche in its product mix by combining and enhancing the features of two of its older products -- DDA/400 and ASP/400.

Looksoftware adds soarchitect to its "Dynamic Environment"
Looksoftware has announced soarchitect. A developer component of the looksoftware "Dynamic Environment," soarchitect is a single integrated environment for modernizing existing IT assets and delivering the benefits of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and composite applications.
Soarchitect relies on two other looksoftware products -- newlook and centric. It creates Web services from modules of code within existing applications. By programmatically accessing existing applications, including those written in RPG or COBOL, reusable modules can be created without changing the underlying application code. Those reusable modules can be easily accessed by other applications being used within the business or by external applications.
Soarchitect facilitates application integration by allowing external business partners access to your applications via customized, secure Web services; by building smart client user interfaces; by integrating your existing applications with Microsoft Office using Web services to provide insulation against changing applications and platforms.
Looksoftware's Marcus Dee called the Dynamic Environment an integrated on-the-fly environment, and that's what makes them different from others in the market.
