eStorage, a leading provider of storage solutions for IBM mid-range computers, announced multi-platform capabilities for its 4575 family of automated tape libraries. These capabilities allow the 4575 to be shared among IBM iSeries, IBM AS/400, Windows 2000, UNIX, Linux, and other computer systems. Previously, the 4575 had been limited to iSeries and AS/400 support.
Based around field-proven Qualstar hardware, the 4575 is a sophisticated family of automated tape libraries that are available with either Sony AIT or IBM LTO tape drives. The AIT models handle up to 12 drives and 360 cartridges (108 terabytes capacity*), while the LTO models support up to 8 drives and 264 cartridges (158 terabytes capacity*). All 4575 models feature leadscrew-based robotics using brushless motors and closed loop servo control systems to provide precise positioning and flawless media handling for years of dependable operation.
"More and more of our iSeries and AS/400 customers also have Windows or UNIX systems," said John Gimpl, eStorage's executive vice-president. "Since tape backup hardware is one of the most expensive components of a computer system, it makes sense to share this hardware among multiple systems. Our 4575 tape library now lets our customers easily and economically leverage a single set of tape resources across all of their systems, regardless of the manufacturer."
"We are pleased to have been selected to supply our TLS-Series automated tape libraries to eStorage," said Bob Covey, Qualstar vice president of marketing. "Our Simply Reliable, cost-effective AIT and LTO libraries really support the strong ROI that eStorage's 4575 delivers for heterogeneous platform users."
The 4575 can be configured with multiple 80MB/sec SCSI HVD or 160MB/sec LVD SCSI host interfaces. An optional 2GB Fibre Channel interface is also available for LAN-free and serverless backup of Windows and UNIX systems. An easy-to-use LCD menu configuration system is standard, with an Ethernet-based configuration module available as an option. Barcode scanning is supported for enhanced throughput and control of the media inventory, while an I/O port allows software control over importing and exporting individual tapes.
All 4575 models offer both random and sequential operation. No special software on the host computer for sequential operation, while random operation is supported by a variety of third-party Windows and UNIX-compatible software packages.
The 4575 automated tape library prices begin at $18,400 for a dual-drive 10 cartridge Sony AIT-2 system. All models are available for shipment within two weeks after receipt of order. For additional details, contact eStorage at (800) 598-9910 or visit the company's web site at www.estorageinc.com.
About AIT Technology
Ever since its debut in 1996, the innovative and unrivaled technology known as AIT has been proving its superior performance and reliability to customers worldwide. System manufacturers and storage solution providers alike have been embracing AIT, incorporating this fast access, high-density, tape recording technology into their own winning solutions. Since its inception, AIT has been a tape technology leader, offering superior capacity, durability, reliability, and scalability.
About LTO Technology
Linear Tape-Open (LTO) technology is an "open format" technology developed jointly by HP, IBM and Seagate, while Ultrium is the high capacity implementation of LTO technology. Because of its open nature, LTO technology ensures that users will have multiple sources of compatible tape products and media. More than five million LTO Ultrium format tape data cartridges have shipped worldwide since September 2000, when products based on the format first became commercially available.
