STORServer has joined forces with Qualstar Corp., a leading manufacturer of tape storage solutions, and is now shipping its new K Series Model 1 appliances, or "K1." The K1 is an optionally self-installed, pedestal or rack mountable STORServer Backup Appliance using Qualstar libraries, with options for AIT, DLT, or LTO tape technology.
The K1 is "configured for affordability to allow small business to take advantage of a Backup Appliance approach to storage," says STORServer President John Pearring. The K1 will backup, archive and provide disaster recovery copies of 250 GB to 2 TB of customer data, depending on the tape technology chosen and the customer's data retention requirements.
The K1 can be installed by the customer or by STORServer and takes just minutes a day to manage, backing up over 30 different platforms and databases, and providing a full backup either on-line or in an off-site DR facility. The K1 -- with a three-year warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee -- is among the lowest priced Backup Appliances in the STORServer line, starting at $13,900 with an AIT2 library.
With smaller libraries than larger STORServer Backup Appliances, the K1 also uses EIDE disk drives rather than SCSI and RAID for the system volumes disk cache pool, continues Pearring. The K1 includes the same version of Windows OS as the larger STORServer Backup Appliances, and base models come with a disk cache pool of 100GB, with an option to add one additional 200GB cache pool disk drive.
Base models include a single tape drive, upgradeable to two tape drives. One tape drive enables the use of either an on-line pool, or an off-site disaster recovery pool. Adding a second tape drive allows the customer to use both an online pool and a DR pool, says Bob Covey, VP of Marketing for Qualstar.
The capacity of the K1 depends on the tape drive type, the number of slots in the library, customer data retention policies and amount of daily changed data. Typical environments range from 250GB upwards to 2TB. "Our libraries allow the K Series to be available in many media types, including AIT2 or AIT3 (10 slot library), DLT8000, SDLT1 or SDLT2 (10 slot library), or LTO1 or LTO2 (11 slot library)," Covey continues.
STORServer also offers basic 8x5 and expanded 24x7 telephone and/or remote management options. For more information on the K1, visit www.storserver.com or call (888) 786-7765. More information about Qualstar can be found at www.qualstar.com or by calling (805) 583.7744.
