Keeping your iSeries behind the firewall is a very solid idea. A good rule of thumb is, if you don't need to allow general Internet traffic access to a corporate system, don't.
The second rule of thumb is, if you don't need to open a port through the firewall, don't.
Most firewalls offer a secure encrypted VPN option that is often quite easy to set up and use. Once connected through a VPN, you can access the server as securely as if you were on your internal network.
As in the above question you will want to make sure that your iSeries is as secure as possible before opening up any new network service on it. ==================================
