Companies have invested a tremendous amount of resources in developing, enhancing and maintaining their IT programs. Most iSeries data centers today rely on RPG in some form or another, few are using RPG II or III, while most are using RPGIV - ILE. Ergo, senior PA opportunities are available now and into the future -- the future being defined as approximately 5 years.
Developing your RPG skills into ILE is important. In addition, most of the requirements that we are seeing for staffing skills include support of third-part applications (JDE, JHA, Infinium, etc.), knowledge of Java and HTML, along with web-enablement processes and skills. Project management and systems analysis are also a requisite for many spots.
To extend your career in the iSeries arena, I suggest that you open your skills to include RPG ILE, MRP/ERP knowledge, Java and HTML programming, and any of the popular web-enablement tools. Look for a position that may allow you to work in the RPG arena while growing in skill set in the areas I have outlined.
