QUESTION POSED ON: 19 May 2004
I know that networking is the best way to find employment. What if you don't live in your target city? What's the best way to network?

>
EXPERT RESPONSE

The most common way to determine opportunities in a remote metro area is to scan the job boards and the 'online' newspapers. However, sending in your resume will usually put you in a large pile of resumes with little opportunity to 'sell' yourself into the company.

You can also contact the user groups in the area to gain a modicum of exposure.

The most effective way to gain exposure to a specific metro area is to work with a recruiting firm that specializes in platforms and technologies in which you are proficient. The recruiting firm will already have an understanding of the area and will have a list of client companies where your skills will be a fit.

Good Luck. Hope this helps.
