I didn't know how to react to your comment that:
"There's painfully few "Java for RPG Programmers", books out there."
Since George Farr and Phil Coulthard are my team mates, I was hoping that you might want to promote their book. However, I believe that you were trying to indicate that we need more resources to educate the RPG
programers in the ways of e-business.
You are absolutely RIGHT !!!
Our strategy is to increase the sources of e-business education.
1) We are expanding the e-business curriculum for iSeries programmers and offering the following courses:
A. OO Design
B. Java for RPG Programmers
C. Java for COBOL Programmers
D. WebSphere Application Server for iSeries
E. WebSphere Studio for iSeries
F. VisualAge for Java for iSeries (including Enterprise Toolkit for iSeries)
G. Java Programming for iSeries using the iSeries Toolbox for Java
H. Moving 5250 Application to the Web with WebFacing Tool and
WebSphere Studio
2. There are a number of books coming out to leverage our new product "WebSphere Studio for iSeries". Kelly Consulting is currently working on the first of a series of books reviewing the capabilities of the iSeries platform and reviewing how WebSphere Development Studio can exploit these capabilities.
3. We have shifted our focus for e-business development. Initially, it appeared as if the entire development community would have to start
programming in Java. Now, there are multiple options for creating
e-business applications.
A. You can Web-enable a 5250 application using the WebFacing Tool and then jazz up the interface using WebSphere Studio for iSeries.
B. We have included wizards in WebSphere Studio for iSeries to access iSeries data and applications and publish Studio projects in WebSphere Application Server. You can now create Web applications without writing any Java code.
C. In VisualAge for Java for iSeries, we have wizards to access
iSeries data and applications. You can even generate Java applications
using VisualAge for Java for iSeries, without writing any Java code.
D. Even for new e-business applications for iSeries, much of the
business logic will be written in ILE RPG or ILE COBOL. It is easier and more productive to write business logic for the iSeries server in these languages than using Java.
E. If the business logic/application is designed to run on multiple
platforms, then Java would be the language of choice. In this environment, the programmer is serious about writing portable,
cross-platform, object oriented applications. This programmer will
become proficient in OO design and Java and probably will expand into
writing Enterprise Java Beans.
The number of options for creating e-business applications have expanded dramatically. Although Java is the language of e-business, many programmers will create e-business applications with only a superficial knowledge of Java.
4. We are trying to use various Web sites, like Search/400, to answer technical questions, as well as tell the world that
"e-business development has just got a whole lot easier !!!"
