QUESTION POSED ON: 15 November 2005
We have sales order file that is about 27 GB in size and contains 27 million records. The file has approximately 12 million deleted records. Is it possible to reorg that file dynamically? How can I assess the time it will take to complete the reorg in the event I arrange the process on a dedicated mode?

Yes, with the V5R3 enhancements to the RGZPFM CL command. The new Lock parameter allows you to allow read and/or write access during the reorg. In addition, the ALWCANCEL parameter allows you to run the reorg for a while and then stop the reorg than restart the reorg again later -- DB2 picks up the reorg from where it was stopped previously.

You might also want to consider reusing deleted records to minimize the need for reorg operations.
