QUESTION POSED ON: 04 February 2005
I am trying to back up spool files on our iSeries using BRMS and I'm having no success. What would the correct steps be for me to get back on the right track? For example, commands, setup of control groups, etc.

>
I use BRMS to backup Spool files all the time. Here is and example:

1. Define a SPL list:

From the main BRMS menu select - 3 Archive - 1 Archive planning - 3 Work with archive lists
Create a list like this (Note: I'm excluding job logs and *OUTQ in library Kenneth and saving everything else)

Use . . . . . . . . . : *ARC
List name . . . . . . : SPOOL
Text . . . . . . . . : Spool File Archive

                                                                        *INC/
Seq Library Outq File Job User User data *EXC
10 QUSRSYS QEZJOBLOG *ALL *ALL *ALL *ALL *EXC
20 QUSRSYS KENNETH *ALL *ALL *ALL *ALL *EXC
30 *ALL *ALL *ALL *ALL *ALL *ALL *INC

2. Hit enter to save the list and they use F12 to back out to the Archive Planning menu.

3. Take option 2 Work with archive control groups and create a group like this:

                  Display Archive Control Group Entries

Group . . . . . . . . . . : SPOOLBU
Default activity . . . . : *ARCPCY
Text . . . . . . . . . . : Archive Spool Files

                             Weekly
        Archive List Activity
Seq Items Type SMTWTFS
  10 SPOOL *SPL *DFTACT

With these attributes:

                   Change Archive Control Group Attributes

Group . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : SPOOLBU

Then run the archive control group you just created and you will be backing up spool files!

In this example, the spool files will be saved in a *SAVF. You can also back them up to a tape.
