QUESTION POSED ON: 19 January 2004
Once a week I use a scheduled job that runs in QCTL to save most of the system. During the week, most of the iSeries memory is in *interact, but can I speed up my backup by "moving" that memory to *machine or *base when I end subsystems? Any guess on how much time would be saved?

>

Backup will generally run better in a larger memory pool.

I'm a big fan of the automatic system tuning feature. It reacts quickly and can be "tweaked" quite easily from the WRKSHRPOOL command interface. I would recommend that you turn on this feature by changing system value QPFRADJ to '3' - "Automatic adjustment".

As for predicting how much time will be saved, there are just too many variables involved to know. Try running with QPFRADJ set to '3' for a week or so to find out.
