Remote terminal error CPF1133

On a remote terminal, I get a CPF1133 - Name not found error when I try to sign on with a legitimate user ID. Can you explain why?

The qualifier is a character string that represents a name. The maximum length of the name is 10 characters for a user profile. The first character must be alphabetic or one of the special characters, $, @, or #. The remaining characters can be alphanumeric, a period, an underscore, or one of special characters, $, @, or #. This must validate to a valid user profile.
